CatFish

It’s a must that I write about this. I was fascinated when I saw the documentary film of Catfish and am loving the TV series on MTV. Catfish was originally based on an American guy who build an online friendship with a girl who had sent him a painting of one of his photographs. This hen turned into an online relationship where he began to fall in love with her. She even introduced him to family members. He started researching more about her and began to doubt who she said she was. He and his brother travelled to meet her to confront her. When they got there, she was FAR from who he thought he was talking to. It was an interesting plot to the film. This prompted the television series which follows the stories of young couples who have fallen in love online but have never actually met face-to-face.

Some people have argued that Catfish could be a a hoax. To be fair, I think it’s a bit silly. Can you REALLY fall in love with someone that you haven’t met? We are all told about the dangers of Internet dating. Different strokes for different folks but I couldn’t do it. I always think I’m that rare case where I’ll meet a man who is a murderer or a rapist or something even worse. But I do know of a few successful turn outs but it’s hit and miss of who’s on the side side of the computer. Don’t get me wrong, I speak to some of my Twitter followers and ALL of them live overseas. It’s general banter, nothing sexual but I would NEVER think of trying to meet up with them or starting a relationship. It’s common sense for me but different people have different views. Each to their own really.

In the first episode, there was a beautiful woman who was speaking to a male model online. She’s fallen in love with him and was even thinking of marrying this guy. With the help of Neev, the presenter of the show, she went to meet him. Boy, oh, boy, was she disappointed. This male model turned out to be a chubby lesbian woman. It was a shock but I actually found it quite funny. They asked the lesbian why she was pretending to be someone else. The reasoning behind it is amazingly funny yet ever so stupid. She said she had an argument with another female online and wanted revenge so she created a fake Facebook profile to get her excited. I didn’t quite understand the logic behind her explanation but she must be a bit crazy. I just about find time to do the stuff I want to do. I don’t have time to pretend to be someone else. What could I possibly gain from it? The truth always gets out.

Moral of the story: Think twice before you get really close to someone online. I really don’t wna be seeing you on Catfish!
